Organic Food Vs. Regular Food

The organic food industry is booming and more grocery stores are including organic produce sections in their stores in order to meet consumer demands. At first glance there doesn't seem to be much difference between organic food and regular food other than organic being slightly more expensive. The increase in price dissuades many people from buying organic food. However, the differences between organic and regular food are worth the price.

Organic food costs a little more than regular food for many reasons. For example, there are a small number of organic farms who are unable to produce a supply to meet the demand. Organic food is also priced higher because of increased production costs due to the farming and safety methods used. However, even more money is spent annually cleaning up the pollution in our air, land, and water caused by agro-chemicals used in conventional farming. From this perspective buying organic food is really more cost efficient than buying regular food.

Organic food is healthier than regular food because it is free of pesticides, harmful chemicals, food additives, and coloring. Regular food is grown using conventional farming methods that use pesticides, chemicals, genetically modified organisms, hormones, antibiotics, and food additives. As a result, conventionally grown food carries chemical and toxic residues that are transferred and stored in our bodies when we consume them. Studies have shown that these chemical residues contribute to many chronic diseases such as certain types of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Organic food is also more ecologically friendly than regular food. Organic farming methods do not taint the earth's resources with chemical and toxic residues.

Recent studies have also shown that organic food contains more nutrients than conventionally grown food. These studies have found that organic food contains significantly higher amounts of nutrients such as vitamin C, Iron, magnesium, and phosphorous. Organic fruits and vegetables have also been found to contain higher levels of anti-oxidants which help to fight aging and cancer. Some people even claim that organic food tastes better than regular food because it contains less water than conventionally grown food and resulting in a more concentrated flavor. Some scientists dispute these findings but more and more studies have been done on nutrient content in organic foods. Hopefully a general consensus will be reached soon.

In the battle for safe, toxic free, ecologically healthy food, organic wins hands down. Although it is more expensive in price it is well worth the cost. The benefits not only include lasting personal health, but also ensuring lasting environmental health for future generations. Choosing to buy organic means taking a step to guard the welfare of humanity and the biodiversity of the planet.
